Summary: Egypt

In partnership with international organisations, Egypt is currently implementing a reform program to modernise its health system. The government will have to raise public health expenditure substantially to finance care at an adequate level, especially in the light of the continuing demographic trends, but the existence of wide budget deficits leave little room for significant increases in healthcare expenditure.

The government is facing mounting pressures over the current drug price freeze, a policy viewed by many companies as unsustainable in the light of the Egyptian pound’s devaluation. Multinationals are calling for an increase in patent protection, as they complain that generics are entering the market before the patent has expired.
