Summary: Morocco

The pharmaceutical market in Morocco is characterised by the large socio-economic disparities and the different levels of consumption between rural and urban areas. Although medicine prices are on average 30% lower than those in France, they are high when compared with average income per inhabitant.

The situation is changing as the authorities are to introduce a national system of health insurance, and this will certainly stimulate demand of pharmaceuticals. In addition, the government is changing industry regulations to allow pharmaceutical producers to open up to foreign capital. The restriction that 51% of the capital be held by Moroccans is being removed to entice large foreign investors and support laboratory growth.
