Summary: Sweden
The Swedish market is characterised by a state pharmacy monopoly – the National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacies (Apoteket). The retail sales monopoly for medicines has been challenged by the European Court of Justice on 31 May 2005 as it ruled the current arrangements were contrary to Community Law. A period of uncertainty over the future development of the market structure best describes the current state of affairs.
The Pharmaceutical Benefits Board began testing nearly 2,000 medicines for reimbursement status in 2003, and is expected to finish its ambitious task in 2008.
